Chapter 36

She asked, “Who was it, Mother?”

I huffed. “Twas the father of Magnus, Lizbeth, though ye canna tell anyone of him. He is our secret.”

“I dinna think Magnus had a father.”

“Of course he has a father. Daena be ridiculous. His father just canna claim him. He is verra wise and important and tae claim Magnus would cause trouble tae befall him.”

“Och, he is just a young boy.”

“Aye but a kingdom awaits him someday.” I looked her up and down. “I am telling ye a great deal, can I trust ye tae keep it a secret?”

“Aye. He gave ye a box?”

“Aye, because I am important, he has given me a gift tae prove it.” I sighed. “Lizbeth, this is our lot in life. Tae guide and rule the household, tae keep the men’s secrets as if we are a vessel for their words, tae hide their bruises as if we are an empty shell for their anger, tae advise them calmly as if we hae nae stakes in their business, and then we just hope they behave in a manner that will keep us safe. Add tae that the other women and their hateful dramas and intrigues, their wagging tongues, and tis a great deal of work for us, ye must be strong.” I tilted my head. “Ye are almost fifteen years auld.”

“Aye, almost.”

I sighed. “I was on the cusp of marriage already, dear Lizbeth. I wish I could keep ye from the same fate, but when the men of a family see a young lass, they see a treaty, and the chance of gaining more power. I canna protect ye from it, ye must grow strong, and as ye grow, ye must watch the household, listen, while the men go about their one business of the day ye must do twice as much without their noticing all ye do. Ye will be exhausted, ye will also be the wisest person in the household.”

“Are ye the wisest person in the household?”

“Aye.”

“Even more wise than the Earl?”

I scoffed. “I am ten times wiser than the Earl.”
